(1360-1431)
Dom Nuno Álvares Pereira was born in 1360 and rose to prominence through his military victories during the crisis of 1383–1385, most notably at the Battle of Aljubarrota. Constable of the Kingdom, he retired from military life in 1423 and entered the Convent of Carmo as a friar.
Nuno Álvares Pereira distinguished himself through his steadfast support for King João I and his decisive victories over the Castilian forces, particularly the Battle of Aljubarrota (1385), which secured Portuguese independence. In recognition of his service, King João I appointed him Constable of the Kingdom and later conferred upon him the titles of Count of Ourém and Barcelos.
With the consolidation of peace with Castile, he withdrew from military life. In 1423, he entered the Convent of Carmo as a friar, a house of worship whose construction he himself had promoted.
