Eusébio da Silva Ferreira was born on 25 January 1942 in Lourenço Marques (now Maputo), Mozambique.
He began his football career in 1957 at Sporting de Lourenço Marques, where he played until 1960. Signed by Sport Lisboa e Benfica, he made his debut for both the club and the national team in 1961.
He won the national championship eleven times, the Portuguese Cup five times, and was European champion in 1962. He received the Ballon d’Or in 1966 and was the top scorer in European competitions in 1968 and 1973.
In the latter part of his career, between 1975 and 1979, he played for several clubs in North America and other countries. After retiring from the field, he served on the technical committee of the Portuguese national team until his death.
He died in Lisbon on 5 January 2014. His remains were transferred to the National Pantheon in 2015.
