Sidónio Pais

(1872-1918)

Sidónio Bernardino Cardoso da Silva Pais, a controversial yet charismatic teacher, soldier, and politician, became widely known as the President-King, a title bestowed upon him by the poet Fernando Pessoa. Elected President on 28 April 1918, he governed amidst a climate of profound political instability and was assassinated on 18 December of that same year.

Sidónio Bernardino Cardoso da Silva Pais was born on 1 May 1872 in Caminha.

He pursued studies in Philosophy and Mathematics at the University of Coimbra where he later obtained a PhD in Mathematics. He became professor of Differential and Integral Calculus and, following the revolution of 5 October 1910, was elected vice-rector. Alongside his academic vocation, he entered the Army and pursued a military career.

In his political career, he successively served as a member of parliament, Minister of Development, and Minister of Finance, and between 1912 and 1916 represented Portugal in Berlin. He led the December 1917 coup and was subsequently elected President on 28 April 1918, guiding the nation through a period of profound political instability.

He was assassinated in Lisbon on 18 December 1918. His remains, initially placed in the Monastery of the Jerónimos, were transferred to the National Pantheon in 1966.
